Rich shares his Isle of Man TT experience - two world record attempt and all!
I was part of a crew sent to the Isle of Man TT with North One TV to document the world record attempt for the fastest lap of the TT circuit by a production car being made by three time British Rally Champion Mark Higgins in Subaru's new 2015 WRX STI. I was shooting time lapse footage using the Syrp Genie and a Canon 5D mkiii, to give a sense of the preparations on the car and the build up to the record attempt. I was there alongside Midlands cameraman Nick Deacon (Fifth Gear, Driven to Extremes) who was shooting slow motion using the Sony F55 with an AXSR5 back recorder, the idea being a mixture of time lapse and slow motion would work well together and make for an interesting piece.
Mark and the Subaru pulled it off and broke the record (twice!) and we got some great footage (coming soon).
Another use we found for the slider and Genie while I was out there was to get cool interior tracking shots (they can be seen in the final piece) across the inside of the car. Normally this would involve cutting the car in half, but as the car was needed for the record attempt we couldn't do that, so instead we hung the slider and genie from the roll cage and used the 5D to film as it tracked through the car. Because of it's size we were even able to track in through the window and across the dash. It's not a shot that's often seen, and all with a few superclamps and a slider.
I had a great time behind the scenes at the TT, it's an event unlike any other in the world of motorsports and set against the beautiful landscape of the Isle of Man it was a truly memorable experience.
